Jefferson was the nation's second vice president, under President John Adams, and ran against him as a Democratic-Republican in the 1800 presidential election with campaign manager Aaron Burr.

Burr and Jefferson tied in the Electoral College, so the choice was thrown to the House of Representatives, where Alexander Hamilton helped swing the vote in Jefferson's favor on the 36th ballot.
